In Standard 8, the Core Humanitarian Standard recommends that organisations have policies in place for both the security and the wellbeing of staff. While many organisations are moving towards implementing safety and security policies, wellbeing standards are often ad hoc or non-existent.
Providing robust wellbeing and resilience structures and support to staff is an essential element of fulfilling duty of care, and there are numerous studies that demonstrate that resilient staff are essential for the healthy functioning of an organisation.

The four stages of a staff wellbeing and resilience audit from Open Briefing are:
Stage 1: Initiate
We will work with you to understand your needs and identify the most applicable standards. The standards we have developed are based on KonTerra’s Essential Principles of Staffcare, the Antares Foundation’s Managing Stress in Humanitarian Workers: Guidelines for Good Practice and other relevant frameworks. From these agreed standards, we will outline a system map and benchmarking for the audit.
Stage 2: Assess
We will gather evidence for the audit from several sources depending on the framework that we are using:
- Document review
- Self-assessment questionnaire
Using a RAG traffic light system, we will record in the system map whether a standard is implemented (green), partially implemented (amber), not implemented (red) or not applicable. We will do this for both paper and practice. In other words, we will assess what is written down in your policies and handbooks and assess what staff are actually receiving in terms of wellbeing and resilience support.
Stage 3: Report
We will provide you with a clear and concise findings report and gap analysis, including a summary traffic light dashboard of the audit system map. We will explain in non-technical language the changes that your organisation should make in order to meet the standards that we are auditing you against. This will include recommendations for policies and trainings as well as the standards that you should effect in order to build up the wellbeing and resilience of your staff team.
Stage 4: Implement
We will work with you for an agreed number of days to implement any recommendations that you need our help with. This might include developing a full package of staff wellbeing and resilience policies, procedures and resources or delivering staff trainings., for example. A staff wellbeing and resilience audit will usually take three days to complete, but it varies depending on the size and complexity of the organisation being audited.
