Introducing our bold new strategy

A just and equitable world where communities and ecosystems can thrive is possible. But social injustice, democratic backsliding, and the climate crisis threaten us all. The courageous people and communities daring to speak out face attacks and reprisals from powerful vested interests. Many pay the ultimate price.

Open Briefing is a vital part of the response. We build resistance and resilience among the people and communities challenging power. Alongside this local support, we provide consultancy and advisory to help nonprofits and foundations take the right risks when supporting and resourcing grassroots change.

The scope and scale of the demand for our support has grown significantly. We are answering more calls for assistance across more countries than ever before. The cases are more complex – involving intersecting physical, digital, and psychological harms – and higher risk, involving highly-capable adversaries acting with increasing impunity. And we find ourselves standing against repressive governments, corrupt corporations, and organised criminal gangs.

Our bold new strategy is based on a clear understanding of the challenge, how we can bring about transformative change, and how we can resource our plans for maximum impact.Click To Tweet

In response, we are embarking on an ambitious strategy to transform into a global platform and meet this challenge responsibly and sustainably at scale. This strategy is based on a clear understanding of the challenge, how we can bring about transformative change, and how we can resource our plans for maximum impact. It also includes the bold action we must take on diversity, equity, and inclusion and in response to the climate crisis. Our three overarching aims for 2023-26 are:

  1. Disrupt attacks and reprisals against the people and communities challenging power.
  2. Strengthen the global support ecosystem for people and communities at risk of attacks and reprisals.
  3. Transition from a lean startup to a global platform that can deliver impact sustainably and responsibly at scale.

A key part of delivering our new strategy is our organisational development. Over the next three years, we will strengthen our organisational governance and leadership; build a diverse, inspired, and purpose-driven team; and create the conditions for financial sustainability and resilience. We are building a consortium of foundations and donors to support this transformation. We are seeking new partners to join Oak Foundation, National Endowment for Democracy, Waverley Street Foundation, and Packard Foundation and support our vital work with multi-year grants and donations.

We are poised to make a major step change to meet the threats to a just and equitable world head on. Please join us in this endeavour!
