The Defender’s Protocol is now available in Ukrainian
There is an urgent need for concise and effective security resources to support activists and journalists in Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion. In response, Open Briefing has published its Holistic Security Protocol for Human Rights Defenders in Ukrainian. Now available in 23 languages, the Defender’s Protocol helps civic actors at risk advance their physical safety, digital security, and wellbeing and resilience.
Seeking an exceptional manager to lead our digital security workstream (remote consultancy)
We are recruiting for an exceptional manager to lead our digital security workstream as part of our senior management team. This is a remote consultancy role, and you can be based in any time zone. As the lead of one of our three holistic security workstreams, you will be the senior manager responsible for helping our digital security team succeed as well as playing a key role in the sustainable growth of our organisation. This is an immediate need, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
Our impact in 2021
Last year was a time of global pandemic and closing civic space, not least of all with the coup in Myanmar and the fall of Afghanistan. The number of calls for our help nearly trebled compared to the previous year. Despite these challenges, those we worked with reported a 15% increase in capacity and a 14% decrease in risk. We provided over 6,000 hours of direct support to civil society organisations and activists under threat in 41 countries and trained over 1,600 human rights defenders.

We have updated our Holistic Security Toolkit with 87 additional resources for specific communities of at-risk civic actors. Available in English and Spanish, users can filter the resources by language, community, and/or domain of holistic security or use the improved search functionality.
Protection Ecosystem Map updated!
We have published a major update to our popular Protection Ecosystem Map. The new version of the Map includes 180 sources of support and we’ve added Spanish descriptions alongside the existing English text.

Open Briefing is seeking a consultant for a large project for a high-profile NGO client. The focus in the first stage will be to review the client's current duty of care provision in relation to digital and information security to specific stakeholders. The assessment will also be conducted through the lenses of organisational values, ethical principles, diversity, equity and inclusion, and power and privilege. You will report into Open Briefing’s project lead as part of a five-person multidisciplinary project team.
