Looking ahead: a new film marking Open Briefing’s 15th anniversary

Open Briefing builds protection and care with people and movements leading change under pressure. We’ve only been able to do that because of the trust, collaboration, and partnerships we’ve built over the past 15 years.

So, when we set out to create a film to mark our 15th anniversary, we knew we wanted it to reflect Open Briefing through the voices of our partners and team members around the world. Together, they tell a richer story about our work, how we’ve evolved, and what we’re working towards.

The reflections in this film echo the thinking behind our 2026–2029 strategy, Regenerative protection for action under pressure. The strategy captures 15 years of learning alongside defenders, movements, nonprofits, foundations, and civil society organisations, and sets out our evolving approach to regenerative protection: one that not only responds to threats, but helps renew the people, relationships, and systems that make collective action possible over time.

Reflecting on a belief that has shaped Open Briefing’s work from the beginning, our founder and CEO, Chris Abbott, says in the film:

“The people that we support and the people we work with have the solutions to the climate crisis, to the rise of authoritarianism, to shrinking civic space, and to the pushback against human rights and social justice. They need the space to enact them, to bring them forward, to progress them. And that’s where we come in.”

That belief continues to shape our work today and the direction set out in our new strategy.

We were delighted to premiere the film during London Climate Action Week in June. Supporters, partners, and friends joined us for a screening followed by a panel discussion that explored the themes that run throughout the film: holistic protection, collective care, and sustaining movements under pressure. You can read more about those conversations in our recent blog, Protection beyond crisis: reflections on sustaining movements under pressure.

As we mark this milestone, we’re grateful to everyone who has shaped Open Briefing’s journey over the past 15 years, and to everyone who continues to build protection and care with people and movements leading change under pressure.

We hope you’ll enjoy the film and explore the ideas and conversations that are shaping the next chapter of our work.
